One of the biggest mistakes made in paranormal investigation is assuming that anything unusual must have an extraordinary explanation.

In reality, some of the most convincing “paranormal” photographs ever captured turn out to be something far more ordinary.

The images shown here are an excellent example.

What The Images Appear To Show

At first glance, many people might describe them as fairies, spirits, energy beings, rods, or other unexplained entities.

In reality, they are insects.

More specifically, they are insects photographed at night using a camera with flash. As they fly close to the lens, the flash overexposes them while motion blur and wing movement create shapes that our brains naturally try to interpret.

Pareidolia And Pattern Recognition

This is known as pareidolia: our tendency to recognize familiar shapes and patterns in random visual information.

It is one of the reasons responsible investigators do not stop at the first explanation that feels exciting.

They investigate further.

Examination Before Conclusion

This does not mean every unexplained photograph has a simple answer. It means every photograph deserves to be examined before a conclusion is reached.

Slow the video down. Review it frame by frame. Look for wings. Look for legs. Look for body structure.

Consider the lighting. Consider the environment. Ask what camera settings were used. And most importantly, ask yourself what the evidence actually supports.

The Burden Of Proof

The burden of proof always belongs to the person making the claim.

If someone claims a photograph shows a fairy, spirit, or unknown entity, then that conclusion should be supported by careful analysis, not simply by how unusual the image appears.

The goal of paranormal investigation is not to prove something extraordinary. The goal is to determine what is actually there.

The Truth Is Worth Finding

Sometimes the answer is remarkable.

Sometimes it is surprisingly ordinary.

Either way, the truth is always worth finding.

5. Keep an Open Mind

Responsible investigators remain open to every possibility. Some experiences have natural explanations, some remain unexplained, and some may challenge what we currently understand. Keep your mind open, but let the evidence guide your conclusions.

6. Investigate Before You Assume

Observation, documentation, experimentation, and analysis should always come before conclusions. An unexplained event deserves careful investigation—not immediate assumptions.

How do we know something is truly paranormal?

The honest answer is…

We don’t.

At least, not immediately.

When something unusual happens in a home or business, it is easy to jump to a paranormal conclusion. A loud knock in the middle of the night, unexplained footsteps, a shadow caught on camera, or an object that appears to move on its own can all feel extraordinary.

But responsible investigation begins by asking a different question:

“What else could have caused this?”

Before considering a paranormal explanation, investigators should first eliminate as many natural explanations as possible.

That means looking beyond the experience itself and examining the environment in which it occurred.

Environmental conditions matter.

Weather matters.

Electrical systems matter.

Air movement matters.

Dust, insects, and airborne debris can affect cameras.

Heating and cooling systems can create sounds, drafts, and unexpected temperature changes.

Buildings naturally expand, contract, settle, and produce noises throughout the day and night.

Even everyday household activity can sometimes explain events that initially appear mysterious.

None of these possibilities should be ignored.

In fact, they should be expected.

This is why professional investigations rely on documentation rather than assumptions.

Environmental readings are recorded.

Weather conditions are logged.

Motion events are documented.

Audio events are reviewed.

EMF levels, temperature, humidity, and other environmental variables are tracked throughout the investigation.

Collecting this information allows investigators to review the evidence later and determine whether an event can be reasonably explained or whether it remains genuinely unexplained.

That distinction is important.

Something being unexplained does not automatically make it paranormal.

It simply means we do not currently have enough information to explain what occurred.

And that is perfectly acceptable.

A good investigator is comfortable saying, “I don’t know.”

Because “I don’t know” is often the most honest answer available.

The goal of an investigation is not to confirm what we already believe.

The goal is to eliminate what we can explain, carefully document what we cannot, and allow the evidence to guide the conclusion.

Sometimes the answer will be completely natural.

Sometimes it will require more investigation.

And sometimes it may remain an anomaly that deserves further study.

That is the difference between belief and investigation.

It is a fascinating question because there is no single answer.

In fact, there may be many.

One possibility involves perception itself. Human beings do not experience the world exactly the same way. Our brains constantly filter, interpret, and prioritize information. Two people can stand in the same room, witness the same event, and walk away with completely different memories of what occurred.

Some people are naturally more observant. Some are more intuitive. Some notice subtle details that others overlook. Others require a higher threshold before considering something unusual.

Psychology may also play a role. Expectation can influence perception. If someone enters a location believing it is haunted, they may pay closer attention to sounds, shadows, movements, and sensations that another person might ignore completely.

This does not mean they are imagining things. It simply means the human mind is an active participant in how we experience the world around us.

Environmental factors may also contribute. Lighting conditions, fatigue, stress, electromagnetic exposure, infrasound, air quality, temperature changes, carbon monoxide, mold, and other variables have all been studied for their potential influence on perception.

Physiology can play a role as well. Sleep paralysis, illness, medication, anxiety, grief, and sleep deprivation can sometimes produce experiences that feel incredibly real to the person experiencing them.

That does not automatically make the experience false. It simply means there may be additional factors worth considering.

Personal beliefs and past experiences can also shape interpretation. One person may view an unusual shadow as a trick of the light, while another may see it as a paranormal encounter. The event may be identical, but the interpretation can be completely different.

Social influences matter too. Stories, local legends, cultural beliefs, group expectations, and even conversations held before an investigation can influence how people perceive and remember events.

When we step back and look at the bigger picture, several major categories emerge: environmental factors, physiological factors, psychological factors, social and cultural influences, and finally... unknown factors.

That last category is important.

Despite everything we know about perception, memory, psychology, physiology, and the environment, there are still experiences reported by people that do not fit neatly into existing explanations.

Many people describe encounters that profoundly affected them—experiences that felt real, meaningful, and impossible to dismiss.

Whether those experiences are psychological, environmental, spiritual, physiological, or something science has yet to fully understand remains an open question.

And perhaps that is what makes the subject so fascinating.

The truth is that we still do not know why some people report seeing apparitions, hearing voices, sensing presences, or experiencing phenomena while others do not.

What we do know is that human perception is complex. Memory is complex. The environment is complex. The human body is complex.

And the unknown remains exactly that—unknown.

As investigators and researchers, our responsibility is not to immediately accept or dismiss an experience. Our responsibility is to ask questions, gather information, consider all possibilities, and remain open to where the evidence leads.

Because understanding why people experience the paranormal may ultimately teach us just as much about ourselves as it does about the phenomena we seek to understand.
